About Zayda Monge Vanegas

In the gentle yet fleeting embrace of childhood, Zayda Monge's spirit shone as a beacon of hope, love, and inspiration. Born in 2009 and tragically taken from us in 2018 at just 9 years of age, Zayda's life, while brief, was one punctuated by radiant warmth, infectious joy, and an unwavering devotion to her faith and community. In Oakland, California, where Zayda called home, her vibrant energy and zest for life was palpable, touching the hearts of relatives, teachers, classmates, and even those who had the privilege of knowing her for just a short while. Such is the legacy of a soul as unique and beautiful as hers — leaving an indelible mark on the world in a mere fraction of the time most are given. The circumstances of Zayda's passing are heart-wrenching. A victim of a hit-and-run collision, her vibrant life was cut short one fateful evening in East Oakland. The subsequent arrest of the individual responsible for the accident was of little consolation to those left behind, grappling with the void left in Zayda's absence. Yet, through their anguish, those who loved her have sought solace in memories, remembering the joyous moments that defined her life. Zayda's aunt, Yesenia Recinos, beautifully encapsulated the essence of the young girl, describing her as "just a beautiful soul... an intelligent, vibrant kid who had great charisma. She lit up the room wherever she went." Her faith was foundational, having attended church since infancy, with Zayda often being a living testament to the teachings of Jesus. Her time at Redwood Christian School in Castro Valley, though short, was profoundly impactful. Superintendent Al Hearne II remembered her as a source of light and positivity, noting her ability to brighten both the campus and the lives of those around her. With a winsome smile that would light up a room, Zayda was ever eager to assist and be of service to her teachers and peers. Teachers at the school fondly remembered her. One stated that she was "dedicated, hardworking, disciplined, and full of life." She was a "true example of how to share God's love with others," a sentiment echoed by another who recalled her as "a very joyful young lady" who was "always smiling, upbeat, and positive." In his tribute, Mr. Hearne expressed a sentiment that many shared: Zayda lived her life with purpose, investing in her community and showing genuine love for those around her. Those who had the fortune of knowing her would forever be inspired by her legacy to do the same. Outside of school, the community also rallied to remember Zayda. A vigil was organized in her honor at her church, Iglesia De Dios. As with any tragedy, the outpouring of support was immediate and heartfelt. The YouCaring fundraising initiative, set up to support her family, quickly surpassed its initial goal, a testament to the community's commitment to supporting one another in the face of adversity. As we remember Zayda, it's impossible to ignore the profound impact she had on those around her. She is survived by her parents, siblings, and countless friends and family members, all of whom are left with a void that cannot be filled. Yet, in their grief, there lies an opportunity for reflection — to honor Zayda's legacy by living life with the same joy, faith, and love that she did. While words may never fully encapsulate the depth of sorrow surrounding Zayda's untimely passing, they offer a chance for healing, remembrance, and a promise to keep her spirit alive. In a world often riddled with darkness, Zayda Monge was a shining star. Her light, though extinguished too soon, will forever guide us, reminding us of the boundless possibilities that come with love, faith, and a zest for life. Written by: Alan Owen
