About Vivian Oakes

Vivian Jane Oakes, age 92, of Canby, MN passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at Ava's House (Hospice Care) in Sioux Falls SD. Funeral Service will be 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby. Burial will be at the Canby City Cemetery, Canby, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Church. The Houseman Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Vivian Joan (Termunde) Oakes was born on July 17, 1926 in Canby MN to Herman and Marie (Koelke) Termunde. Vivian graduated from Canby High School in 1945. She married her true love, Walter Martin Oakes (known by most as Mike) on September 22, 1946. The couple lived in rural route Canby on Vivian's home farm and later moved to town. Mike farmed with his father-in-law and later worked at various local gas stations. Vivian held several jobs, including working at Wiest Produce, Coast to Coast, Canby Drug, Schott's and the Canby Hospital. When she wasn't "at work" Vivian could be found in her garden or in her kitchen baking sweet treats for her family and friends. Her nieces and nephew knew exactly where to go to find their favorite candy (in the kitchen cupboard, third drawer down on the left side of the kitchen sink). Vivian loved sitting outside watching her cats and waited every year for the return of a wood duck that made its home in the hollow of one of the trees in her backyard. You knew it was a Monday if you drove by 411 Haarfarger and saw laundry on the line. Vivian could often be seen at the Lancer's basketball games and she could keep score like a pro. The Minnesota Gophers (basketball and football), the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings kept her busy and just as frustrated as any other Minnesotan. Vivian attended Our Saviour Lutheran church and as with most Lutherans, she had her "spot" to sit in. When she could Vivian participated in Ladies Aide, the church booth at the county fair and was always willing to lend a helping hand in the kitchen. Vivian is survived by her sister, Darlene Voxland, Plymouth, MN; her nephew, Gene (Joanna) Termunde, Orlando, FL; her niece, Kimberly (Michael) Arnett, Cordele, GA, her niece, Lisa Waldner, Worthington, MN and her niece Vickie (Kenneth) Bierman, Adams, Tennessee; nine great-nieces and nephews: Christopher, Amber and Aaron Termunde, Dwayne and Tiffany Arnett, Logan and Sarah Waldner, Allie and Joe Bierman; and one great-great nephew, Trae Arnett. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, and her brother, Darrold Eugene Termunde Sr.
