About Uel Alsup

Idaho Press Tribune, > December 15, 2010 > Uel Lynn Alsup, 94, passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at a Nampa hospital, surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Sat., Dec. 18 at the Nampa 35th Ward LDS Chapel, 11288 W. Roosevelt in Nampa. There will be a viewing Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Zeyer Funeral Chapel, 83 N. Midland Blvd. in Nampa, and Sat. morning at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario, Ore. Uel was born Nov. 19, 1916, in Willow Springs, Mo., the oldest child of Lewis Elmer and Bettie Henry Alsup. Uel had two brothers, Roy and Don, and a sister Mary, who all preceded him in death. Uel grew up in the Ozark Mountains, where he learned to trap rabbits, shoot squirrels and wild turkeys, and pick wild blackberries to sell to help the family. He also helped care for livestock and worked on the farm. From these experiences, he learned the value and rewards of hard work. He married Hannah Irene Owen on June 12, 1936, and the two started out farming in Missouri until the Dust Bowl destroyed their crop. They then moved to Castleford, Idaho, then settled in Nyssa and later Ontario, Oregon. Uel served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II, and saw action in the Philippines. He returned home and worked at farming and bee keeping, as a mechanic for Hollingworth Implement for 20 years and was a supervisor for Blacker's Furniture Warehouse. His favorite job was working as the church custodian. He worked at that job for 10 years before retiring in 1981. Uel and Irene joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in May of 1957 and were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple May 22, 1958. They were among the first ordinance workers in the Boise Temple when it opened in 1984. Irene died April 2, 1990. Uel married Elizabeth (Betty) Skinner May 16, 1992, in the Boise LDS Temple. Shortly afterward, they accepted a call to serve in the Michigan, Lansing Mission. After their mission, they lived in Boise for a few years, then moved to Nampa, where Uel spent his time growing a bountiful garden, fruit and nut trees, and beautiful flowers, all of which he generously shared with family, friends, and neighbors. Uel served faithfully in various church callings, including as a counselor in a bishopric and as a ward and stake clerk. He loved serving as a worker in the Boise Temple until 2004, and continued attending the temple weekly with his wife until the final few weeks of his life.
