About Thomas Abbey
Thomas J. Abbey, 88, of Wyoming, Ill., formerly of Peoria, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at 2:40 a.m. at the Bel-Wood Nursing Home. Tom was born Oct. 24, 1921, in Peoria, the son of James and Cora Belle Smith Abbey. He married Betty Allen on Aug. 19, 1955, in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Mark (Brenda) Abbey of North Pekin and Scott Abbey of Peoria; and three daughters, Ellen (Don) Nelson of Sarasota, Fla., Sheila Whittaker of Wyoming and Audrey Gustafson of Henry. Also surviving are one brother, John (Mary) Abbey of East Peoria; six sisters, June Abbey, Betty Mau, Johanna Cooper, Elmira Bonner and Cora Burford, all of Peoria, and Imogene Myers of Nebraska. Tom was a 50-year honorary member of Local 165 and had worked for the city of Peoria for 22 years, until his retirement in 1977. Tom enlisted with the Civilian Conservation Corps and later enlisted in the Army. He was a veteran of World War II and also served in the Korean War, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the Great Western Boat House Club and also was a member of the NRA for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Cremation rites have been accorded.
