About Therald Quayle

Therald Philip Quayle passed away on July 16, 2022, from a condition he described as "too many birthdays." He was born January 17, 1933, in Brigham City, Utah, to Philip Douglas Quayle and Cora Marie Toombs Quayle. His childhood was spent on the family farm in Perry, Utah, where he learned the value of hard work and developed a love of the land. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Africa. His mission was the beginning of a life of faithful service. He married (Johnson) in the Logan Temple. Together they raised 5 sons. He was a great supporter of them and their activities. He and Elizabeth attended sporting events to support their boys all over the state of Utah, across the country, and around the globe. He served faithfully in numerous church callings including bishop, a counselor of the Canyon View Stake Presidency and numerous others. He served with his wife, Elizabeth, as a temple worker in the Ogden and Brigham City Utah Temples. He had a great love of the Scouting program and was awarded the Silver Beaver for his many years of service. Education was important to him. He completed bachelor's and master's degrees in science at Utah State University. Because of these degrees many knew him as "Mr. Quayle." He taught science at Wahlquist Junior High and Weber High School. He later taught agricultural science and welding and was an advisor for the Future Farmers of America at Weber High School. His last position with Weber County School District was director of the Swanson North Fork Environmental Center. This "dream job" allowed him to work with students and teachers across the school district and share his love of the outdoors. Much of his time was spent in the mountains with his family. The annual deer hunt, fishing, and camping at Mirror Lake each July helped create fun and lasting memories. His grandchildren called him "Poppy" and he loved to pop "Poppy's Popcorn" over the open flames of our campfires. His early years on the farm influenced the rest of his life. He loved his garden and taking his grandchildren out to eat raspberries, blackberries, apricots, and the other things he loved growing. If you knew Therald, you knew he loved to talk. He could strike up a conversation with a total stranger and before long they knew about his life on the farm, his service in South Africa, his boys, his beautiful wife, his 10 grandchildren, his rides on the four-wheeler, his blackberries, and anything else he decided to share with them. When people learn our last name, we routinely hear, Is your Dad, "Mr. Quayle," or "Brother Quayle?" And then we would hear, "He was my science teacher," or "He was my Bishop," or "He took me snowshoeing at the Environmental Center." So many people knew and adored him. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Ladd, and his sister Karen Wyatt. Interment will be at the Willard Cemetery.
