Tamiko Oberholtzer

Tamiko Oberholtzer, 88, of Terre Haute, passed away Monday November 28, 2016 at 1:15 a.m. in Bethesda Gardens. Tamiko was born in Tokyo Japan on October 20, 1928 to Ihei and Ai Ishizuka Ishiguro. Tamiko moved to the United States after meeting her husband, David Maurice Oberholtzer while he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Tamiko and her husband arrived in California by ship and then made their way to Indiana by car to her new home in Bowling Green Indiana. She soon began to adapt to a very new way of life in a very different culture than she was accustomed to. She learned to garden and always planted and grew enough to have vegetables for the family though out the winter. Tamiko and her husband raised three children on their farm in Bowling Green, instilling in each of them the importance of hard work and education, insisting that they all graduate from college and learn to play at least one musical instrument. She was an excellent seamstress making most of the family's clothing and making clothes for friends and other family members. She was an excellent artist and musician. She was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Bowling Green. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Fumiko Yoshizawa, two sister's in-law, Fern Johnson and Catherine Gammans, and her husband David Maurice Oberholtzer who died June 17, 1994. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday December 3rd, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, IN., 47804. A gathering of family and friends will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Bowling Green at a later date. Rev. Larry Spear will be officiating. The family strongly suggests that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 50 E 91st St #100, Indianapolis, IN. 46240.
