Sammy Franklin Barnette

Mr. Sammy "Sam" Franklin Barnette, 83, of Raven, Va., passed away on Monday, September 18, 2023, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 12, 1940, in Richlands, Va., to the late Albert William Barnett, Sr. and Bertha Lee Trivett Barnett. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by siblings, Dorothy Presley, Nell Richardson, A.W. Barnett, Jr., Curtis Barnett, Ted Barnett, Leo Barnett and Alberta Barnett. Sam was a master Barber and a business owner in the Richlands area for over 60 years. He loved his trade and went to many homes and nursing homes over the years to cut peoples hair. He was a former owner of Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery, an avid golfer and member of the Tazewell County Country Club. Sam was a founding member of Community Heights Baptist Church and a current member of Worship Hymn Church. He was an avid supporter of Richlands High School athletics, Sam helped to get the first lights installed at the Richlands Football field, he was a founder of the Richlands Boxing Club and president of the Raven PTA Club. He was member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 A.F. & A.M. and the Kazim Shriner's Temple in Roanoke. Survivors include his loving wife, Kathy Barnette; children, Tommie Lee Stewart and husband, Steve of Radford, Va., Samantha Horn and husband, Tim of Richlands, Chad Cole and wife, Emily of Pounding Mill, Va.; grandchildren, Jade Greenawalt, Jacob Greenawalt, Samuel Horn, Sadie Cole, Bryce Cole and Darcy Cole; great grandson, Jackson Parker; brothers, Jack Barnett and wife, Betty of Coco Beach, FL, and Roger Barnett of Amonate, Va.; his k-9 companion, Scruffy; many nieces, nephews and special soft ball friend, Elrae Patton. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, September 21, 2023, at Singleton Funeral Service. Masonic Funeral Rites will follow at 8 p.m., conducted by the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 A.F. & A.M. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday in the chapel with Pastor Doug Allen officiating. A committal will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Tim Horn, Steve Stewart, Chad Cole, Jacob Greenawalt, Samuel Horn, Jackson Parker, Seth Parker, C.J. Cromer and Bryce Cole.
