About Ruby Gable
COLUMBIA- Ruby Juanita Gable, daughter of the late Eugene Stanmour Whittle and Carrie Lou Gardner, died Monday, February 17, 2020. She was born March 31, 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama. After graduating from the South Carolina State Hospital School of Nursing and Roper Hospital in 1948 as a registered nurse, she did private duty nursing and was head nurse at Providence Hospital until she went to University Hospital of Alabama School of Anesthesia in 1951. She married C. Odell Gable on August 16, 1952, a marriage that lasted almost 48 years until his death on June 8, 2000. She did private duty anesthesia from 1952 until 1976 in all of the hospitals in Columbia and those in Winnsboro and Camden, S.C. In 1977, she started volunteering with the American Red Cross for one year then became a full time employee for 11 years. At the age of 60, she was given a “special early retirement” that lasted over 30 years. She is survived by her sons, Robert Edwin and David Dean Gable of Columbia and one brother, Gardner Eugene Whittle (Susan) of Jackson, S.C. Memorials may be made to Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, 3401 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204 or a charity of one’s choice. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, February 23, 2020 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 23, 2020, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
