About Robert Oaks
The HawkEye Oct 23, 2005 ROBERT OAKS Robert Francis Oaks, 87, of Burlington died at 10:05 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Dec. 27, 1917, in Canton, Mo., he was the son of Forest and Elsie Monticue Oaks. On July 11, 1936, he married Elizabeth Rowland in Palmyra, Mo. She died Aug. 5, 1989. Mr. Oaks worked as a salesman and manager for 30 years for Yetter Oil Co. and Home Oil Co. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a World War II Navy veteran and served on the USS Bennington, and also served in the Korean War. He was a former member of the Elks, Eagles and Moose organizations. He enjoyed competitive swimming during high school and photography. He was a history buff and loved to travel. Survivors include two daughters, Lynne Jones of Denver and Susan McNeil of Estes Park, Colo.; two sons, R. Michael Oaks of Paris, France, and Matthew Oaks of Burlington; nine grandchildren; and five great–grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. 8:30 p.m. Monday at Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 a.m. The funeral for Mr. Oaks will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with Pastor Trevor Davis officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the church by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League and AMVETS Post 29. Burial will be in Kirkwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
