About Paul Zahurance
Paul Zahurance Nov. 15, 1924—Sept. 23, 2006 Paul Jerome Zahurance, 81, of Sarona died Sept. 23 at Spooner Health System Nursing Home. Graveside services were Wednesday afternoon at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery near Spooner, with the Rev. Ray Rogers officiating and military honors accorded by the Wisconsin Military Honors Program-Spooner Detachment. Mr. Zahurance was born Nov. 15, 1924 in Turtle Lake to Steve and Suzie (Punjak) Zahurones. After his schooling he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Ladysmith and then moved to Cicero, Ill., where at the age of 17 he went to work for Cicco Steel. Mr. Zahurance later volunteered for the Army and was a sergeant first class in the 82nd Airborne, 505 PIR, F Company during WW II. During his 2 years in the Army, he earned the Purple Heart with two stars, the Bronze Star, Markmanship Badge and four Bronze Battle Stars while fighting in five countries in the European Theater and at Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Market Garden. Mr. Zahurance married Josephine Szurko on Feb. 8, 1947 in Chicago. He worked at Western Electric Wire Mill in Cicero; was a supervisor, union steward and operated various machines for 28 years at Stone Container Corp. in Chicago; and then was self-employed with Amway for 18 years. Mr. Zahurance retired in 1975, and the couple moved to Sarona. He is survived by his wife, Josephine; two sons, Paul of Sarona and Don of Port Washington; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Zahurones of Appleton; and a sister, Mary Baker of Appleton.
