P B Fairley

Obituary for P. B. Fairley P.B. “Pete” Fairley, 90, of Moss Point, MS, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2019. He was born in the Fort Bayou Community of Jackson County, MS, and grew up in Port St. Joe, FL, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Pete attended Florida State University and graduated from University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in business/accounting. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and took basic training in the 8th Infantry Division at Fort Jackson, SC. He was then in the 101st Airborne Division and later transferred to the Florida National Guard and was assigned to the 1st Armored Division, 124th Infantry. He attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. Pete was employed by International Paper Company in 1960 as an accountant and moved to Moss Point, MS with his young family. He retired from IPCO after 34 years. For many years, Pete was a member of First Baptist Church (SBC), Moss Point, MS, where he was a deacon, Sunday School Director, Training Union Director, and Sunday School Teacher. At the time of his death, he was a member of Dantzler Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as church treasurer. Through the years, Pete served on numerous civic boards including Chairman of the Board of Adjustments for the City of Moss Point, President of Moss Point Rotary Club (where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow), President of the International Paper’s Quarter Century Society, and President of Dantzler Church Young at Heart Club. He was on the Board of Directors at Singing River Federal Credit Union, where he was board treasurer for many years. In 2009, he was inducted into the Mississippi Credit Union Association Hall of Fame. At the SRFCU annual meeting in 2015, he was honored on his retirement for 53 years as a credit union volunteer, serving in several different capacities. Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Peter Broscoe and Edith Magdalene Fairley. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, June Smith Fairley; twin daughters, Teresa Barber and Joyce Morris (Roy “Bud”, Jr.) of Pascagoula, MS; four grandchildren, Heath Morris (Brooke) of Ocean Springs, MS; Ryan Morris (Laura) of Pascagoula, MS; Lauren Williams (Andrew) of Daphne, AL, and Bradley Massengale (Molly) of Lenexa, KS; 4 great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Bradyn and Kennedy Morris, and Peyton Williams. The visitation for Pete will be held from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at Heritage Funeral Home in Moss Point, MS. The funeral will follow in the funeral home chapel at 3:00 PM with Rev. David Newton, Rev, David Greer, Rev. Paul Roney officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Machpelah Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bud, Heath and Ryan Morris, Bradley Massengale, Andrew Williams, and Jimmy Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Moss Point Rotary Club.
