About Ollie Brown
Major League Baseball Player. For thirteen seasons (1965 to 1977), he played in the outfield with the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. Born Ollie Lee Brown, he was raised in California, where he attended Polytechnic High School in Long Beach and later enrolled at Long Beach City College. Selected by San Francisco as an amateur free agent in 1962, he marked his Major League debut on September 10, 1965. Brown had the distinction as being the first selection of the 1968 Expansion Draft, when he was chosen by the Padres. He produced two consecutive 20-home run seasons (1969 and 1970) and drove in a career-high 89 runs in 1970. During the course of his career, Brown established himself as a supreme defensive outfielder with a strong, accurate arm. While with the Phillies, he served as an effective pinch-hitter and produced a .303 batting average in 1975. In 1,221 career regular season games, he compiled 964 hits with a .265 lifetime batting average. His older brother Willie Brown (not to be confused with Hall of Fame football player Willie Brown of the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders) played in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams. His younger brother Oscar Brown played Major League Baseball with the Atlanta Braves. Ollie died of complications from mesothelioma.
