About Nan McComber

Nan "Nannie Mae" Belvin McComber, age 83 died at her home in Hayes on Monday, January 30, 2023, surrounded by her family. Nan retired in 2017 from the US Navy Memorial, in Washington DC as Director of Navy Log. The Navy Log is the nation's largest publicly available archive of Sea Service personnel in the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines. Nan was always a hard worker. At age 11 she began picking crabs and in high school waited tables at various Yorktown restaurants and was the Hayes Pharmacy bookkeeper. She worked in Civil Service at Cheatham Annex, Fort Eustis, and Fort Monroe. It was at Fort Monroe that Nan met Mac. Together they started Par-Time, a temporary help service on the Peninsula, then Nan went to work in Richmond for Blue Cross/ Blue Shield. After Nan and Mac married in 1974, they moved to Falls Church, VA, and Nan settled into being a housewife. It is during this time that she began painting ceramics. Many individuals have been blessed with receiving a Christmas tree, Santa, Easter eggs, pumpkin, or some special item they knew they would like. Her crowning ceramic achievement is her nativity set. In the late 80s, Nan began working at the Navy Memorial log desk greeting museum visitors. Nan and Mac began traveling in their motorhome full-time in the early '90s. Together they traveled to every state in the continental U. S and some areas of Canada. Along with their adopted family the Eng's from Florida they took cruises to Alaska and Greece. Having gotten interested in genealogy after the death of her father, she was able to do extensive genealogy research on her family and Guinea as she and Mac traveled. Every September Nan would display her volumes of research on family lineage including documents, maps, deaths, births, and pictures at the Guinea Jubilee. The highlight of her genealogy research is when the Guinea Heritage Association selected her as the 2019 Guinea Jubilee Grand Marshall. After she and Mac stopped traveling due to health issues they moved to Fredericksburg. Nan went back to work full-time at the Navy Memorial. She loved working there and met many famous actors like Ernest Borgnine, Tony Curtis, and Gary Sinise to name a few. She was responsible for getting tens of thousands of men and women enrolled in the navy log. After her retirement in 2017, Nan moved back to Gloucester to be with her family. Husband Clarence "Mac" Albert McComber, parents Joseph and Mattie Bonneville Belvin, son, Erik McComber, grandson Collin McComber, and son-in-law Carlton Walker preceded her in death. She is survived by daughters, Angie Jenkins, and Gina Walker, son Sean McComber (Jacky), grandchildren Randy Walker (Melissa), Madison, Kadence, and Trey Kimmel, great grandchildren Emma, Alexandria (Lexi), Tammy, sister Vernetta Coates (Richard), niece Barbara Haselwood (John) and nephew Keith Coates (Carla) and feline companion Smokey. The family will receive friends Friday, February 10, 2023, from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm at Hogg Funeral Home. A funeral service officiated by Pastor Bill West will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 11, 2023, in the chapel of Hogg Funeral Home followed by entombment at Rosewell Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In her memory, memorial contributions may be made to Guinea Heritage Association, PO Box 411, Bena, VA 23018. The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Hiotellis and the staff of TPMG, Amedisys, Bon Secours Home Health, and At Home Care & Hospice for their help to provide the family necessary support to honor our mother's wish to transition from her earthly home to her heavenly home surrounded by the people she loved. Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
