Morgan Solger Vail

Morgan Solger Vail, 87, died at the Mertens House in Woodstock on September 23, 2011 surrounded by his family. Morgan was born on January 9, 1924 in Pomfret, Vermont the son of Solon Joshua and Edith Solger Vail. Morgan graduated from Woodstock High School in 1941. He served in the United States Navy from March of 1944 to June of 1946. On September 11, 1948 he married Marjorie Southgate. Morgan was a traveling salesman in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont for 20 years. In 1972 he purchased and ran the Men's Shop in Woodstock until his retirement in 1984. Morgan played baseball for the Woodstock Town Team from 1941 to 1944 and from 1946 to 1950 taking leave of the team to serve in World War II. From 1947 to 1951 he was the assistant director of the Woodstock Recreational Centers Vail Playground Program. Morgan also served as a ski patrolman at Suicide Six for many years and was a member of the National Ski Patrol. Morgan enjoyed tennis, golf, skiing, and fishing. Morgan is survived by his wife Marjorie of Barnard, VT, his 3 children; Natalie Vail of Northfield, MA, Laurel and her husband Erik Tobiason of Barnard, VT, and Morgan and his wife Sheri Vail of Basalt, CO and his two grandchildren Justin and Crosby. In addition to his parents he is pre deceased by three sisters Vivian Bates, Thelma Kovensky, and Beatrice Stansfield. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday September 28th at 11:00 am at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph, Vermont. There will be no calling hours.
