About Michael Frassrand
Father Francis Frassrand, CSP, was born in Winchester, Tennessee, on December 12, 1894. He was the son of a farmer, and attended local parochial schools before going on to St. Joseph's College in Bardstown, Kentucky. In 1917 he entered the Paulist community and began studies at Catholic University. He made first promises on May 7, 1924, and was ordained a Catholic priest on September 20, 1924. Father Frassrand initially had brief assignments as treasurer of St. Paul's College in Washington, DC, and then as curate at the parishes of Saint Paul the Apostle and Good Shepherd in New York. He then went to Old Saint Mary's parish in Chicago, serving as both curate and missionary. In 1932 Fr Frassrand returned to New York for a short period before becoming pastor of his home parish, Good Shepherd in Winchester, Tennessee. Besides serving as pastor he was actively involved in Depression-era mission work in the deep South – often giving missions in towns where the sight of a Catholic priest was a rarity. In 1938 he left Winchester to work on the mission bands based in Chicago, then in San Francisco and then in Detroit. At the end of World War II he was appointed Superior at the Paulist parish in Chicago where he spent the next seven years. In 1952 he moved to New York to become Treasurer of the Paulist Fathers, a post he retained until shortly before his death in 1970. He handled the community finances under Superiors General Fr. William Michell, CSP, and Fr. John Fitzgerald, CSP, – also serving as a General Consultor under Fr. Fitzgerald. He died in New York at the age of 75 after 45 years as a Paulist priest.
