Louis Zacher – May 22, 1926 – April 18, 2007 A Mass of Christian burial for Louis P. Zacher, 80, Belfield, is at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2007, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield, with the Rev. Shannon Lucht, celebrating. Military honors will be provided by William C. Blair Post No. 144. Interment is in the St. Charles Cemetery, Bowman. Visitation is from 2:30-3:15 p.m. today at St. Luke's Home and continues at 4 p.m. at St. Bernard?s Catholic Church with a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m. Louis Zacher died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center, Dickinson. Louis Zacher was born on a farm southwest of Eagle Butte, S.D., on May 22, 1926, to Anton and Katherina (Meier) Zacher. He attended rural grade school and Eagle Butte High School. During his senior year he was drafted into the U.S. Navy. After Louis's discharge, he graduated as valedictorian in 1945. Immediately after graduation, he went to Miles City, Montana, to learn telegraphy and worked as agent-operator for Milwaukee Railroad for 37 years starting on the Rocky Mountain Division at Avery, Idaho, in July 1945. Louis also worked at Three Forks and Superior, Mont., before returning closer to home. Before settling in Bowman for most of the 30 years he worked at McLaughlin, S.D., Lemmon, S.D., Hettinger, Scranton, Rhame and Marmarth. He spent his last few years at Reeder, Gascoyne, Scranton and shortly in Baker, Montana. He finally wound up in Miles City, Montana, where the last Milwaukee train left March 31, 1982. Louis married Wilma Bontje on Nov. 27, 1956, in Larchwood, Iowa. His wife, Wilma, passed away on March 16, 1983. Later Louis married Mary Hutzenbeler on Sept. 1, 1984, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Belfield. They eventually moved to Belfield. He was a member of the St. Bernard's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Club. Louis is survived by his wife, Mary, Belfield; children, Tim (Jayne) Zacher, Ada, Minn., Sheila (Ken) Jonet, Green Bay, Wisc,, Marty (Nancy) Hutzenbeler, Belfield, Sandra (Thomas) Stephens, Belfield, Anita (Darwin) Bietz, Lincoln, Neb., and Linda (William) David, South Heart; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Anne Simpson, Rapid City, S.D.
