About Leo Cabelof
Age 94, son of the late John and Mary Cabelof. A lifelong resident of Erie, he retired in 1968 as a general foreman from General Electric after 44 years of service with the company. An excellent athlete, he wrestled for Doc Ainsworth and played soccer for the undefeated General Electric team. He also played professional baseball and pitched for the Erie Sailors. For 30 years he served as an umpire along with his late brother, George. He helped organize an umpire school in Erie and enjoyed working with new, young umpires. He was a member of the Russian Old Believers Church of the Holy Trinity and for 20 years served as president of the CYS Club. He was a lifetime member of the Maennerchor Club and the East Erie Turners. He was preceded in death by a son, Lee Thomas Cabelof, who died in 1991; a brother, George Cabelof; and three sisters, Theresa Morris, Martha Martin and Marie Treado. He is survived by his wife, Rita Evanoff Cabelof; a daughter, Phyllis A. Lewonas of Erie; a daughter-in-law; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be at Belle Valley Cemetery.
