About Lawrence Hays
U.S. Congressman. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army and after the war, he graduated from University of Arkansas, in 1919, from the Law School of George Washington University, 1922, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice in Russellville, Arkansas. He was assistant attorney general of Arkansas, (1925-27), Democratic National committeeman for Arkansas, (1932-39), NRA labor compliance officer for Arkansas in 1934), assistant to the administrator of resettlement in 1935 and held administrative legal positions in the Farm Security Administration, (1936-42). In 1943, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-eighth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1959. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was member of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Valley Authority, (1959-61), Assistant Secretary of State for congressional relations, in 1961 and Special Assistant to the President of the United States, (1961-64). He also was at the University of Massachusetts, (1966-67) and director of Ecumenical Institute at Wake Forest University, (1968-70).
