Lamar Preston Waddell

Lamar P. Waddell Indianola Lamar Preston Waddell, 84, of Indianola, died Monday, October 6, 2014 in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Mr. Waddell was born in Sallis, Mississippi on March 21, 1930, and was the son of Carrie Lucas and William Ira Waddell. He was a graduate of Sallis High School where he was a member of the 1947 State Championship Football Team. In 1951, he received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Mississippi. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corp. Mr. Waddell went to Paris Island for Officer Training School. He became the Executive Officer of the Vertical Assault Force, and was an officer during the Korean Conflict. At Quantico, he taught military personnel in vertical assault tactics. In the spring of 1957, he married Bette Harville. In 1961, he and Bette moved to Indianola and bought Cities Insurance & Investment Company, Inc., and he began farming. Mr. Waddell later purchased Delta Insurance Agency in Leland, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bette Harville Waddell; three brothers; and four sisters. Mr. Waddell is survived by four sons, Lamar Preston Waddell, Jr., and his wife, Jan, of Tupelo, Mississippi, Randle Cary Waddell, and his wife, Gina, of Madison, Mississippi, Dr. David Ira Waddell, and his wife, Kim, of Madison, Mississippi, and Brian Mark Waddell, and his wife, Kelly, of Indianola, Mississippi; one daughter, Elizabeth Waddell Putnam, and her husband, Michael, of Oxford, Mississippi; eleven grandchildren, Lamar Preston Waddell, III, Michael L. Putnam, Jr., Mary Laurie Adamopoulos, Dr. Bette Catherine Putnam, Davis Waddell, Alexandra Waddell, Will Waddell, Miranda Waddell, Drew Waddell, Claire Elizabeth Waddell, and E. E. Waddell; and three great grandchildren, Ashlynn, Vincent, and Elise. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 9, 2014 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Burton Funeral Home in Indianola. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, October 10, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Indianola City Cemetery. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola is in charge of arrangements.
