About Johnny Longden
Hall of Fame Horse Jockey. Johnny Longden began his career as a jockey in 1927 and rode for almost 40 years. He obtained lengendary status in 1943 when he rode Count Fleet to victory in the Triple Crown which marks the last time this feat was accomplished. Longden finished his riding career with a victory in the 1966 San Juan Capistrano Handicap Race which marked the 6,032 win in his career. He turned to training after his retirement and in 1969, he won the Kentucky Derby with Majestic Prince. That victory established John as the only person to ride a Derby winner and later train one. He has been honored by enshrinement in the Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y and in 1952 was awarded Santa Anita's George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. Longden went to school with George Woolf, who was killed in a spill at Santa Anita in 1946, while living in the prarie town of Taber, Alberta, Canada. A bronze bust is located in the paddock gardens at Santa Anita placed by the Los Angeles Turf Club. The City of Arcadia named a street after him. "Longden Avenue" A memorial service was held at the Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd in Arcadia, California.
