About John Zackrison

John Randall ("Jack") Zackrison died on Tuesday, February 22, 2000, one day before his 72nd birthday. He died of complications of Alzheimer's Disease and a Stroke at Garden Terrace Care Center in Millcreek Township, Utah, surrounded by his family who were at his bedside during his final month. Jack is survived by his wife, Mary, of nearly 50 years; and his six children, John A. (Dorothy); Ann (Tom) Marben; David R. (JoAnn), Paul B. (Becky), Mem (Eldon) Greenwood, Michael A. (Candi). He has 28 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Mortenson, and Jean (Wilson) Martin, brother-in-law, Dean Bullock, and many nieces and nephews. He has been preceded in death by his parents, and older sister, Edith Bullock. The son of John W. and Afton Randall Zackrison, Jack grew up near Granite High School, where he graduated in 1946. During high school, Jack was an all-state athlete in basketball and football. He was student body president of Granite High, seminary president, and won the prestigious Moss Award while there. He continued his athletic career on a four-year football scholarship at the University of Utah, where he quarterbacked the team and was a class officer. He graduated in 1950 with honors and married his high-school sweetheart, Mary Kasteler, on March 17, 1950. Jack worked for IBM, marketing mainframe computers to the U.S. military and other major accounts, for 35 years. During his IBM career he lived with his family in Dayton, Ohio, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He returned to Salt Lake City in 1972 and completed his IBM career in 1985. Thereafter, he worked a second career as a consultant in the information systems group of Questar Corporation. Devout and active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jack served in many callings throughout his life. While in Ohio, he served on the original high council in the first stake in Cincinnati. He was also called as branch president in Middletown, Ohio, where he was instrumental in helping the small branch grow into a ward with its own chapel. He served in bishoprics, stake callings and high councils in Ohio, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and Salt Lake City. He especially loved working with the youth of the Church including many years in the Monument Park Stake. One of the choicest assignments he ever had was as a missionary with his sweet companion, Mary, in the Munich, Germany Mission between 1993 and 1995. It was shortly thereafter that Jack was overcome with Alzheimer's Disease. Jack is fondly remembered for the quiet determination with which he approached every situation, for his steady reliability and for the affection which he held for his wife and family. His strong testimony and unwavering faith guided him continuously throughout his life. He will be remembered forever by his family as a true patriarch. A Viewing will be held for Jack at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at the Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 South Wasatch Dr, on Monday, February 28, 2000, at 12 noon.
