About Jim Jim
Major League Baseball Player. Born James Riley Turner. He was a pitcher for nine seasons (1937 to 1945) with the Boston Bees, Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees. After making his big league debut in 1937 at age 33, Turner enjoyed his most successful season that year, winning 20 games and leading the National League in complete games with 24, shutouts with 5 and ERA with 2.38. He was selected to the National League All Star Team in 1938 and was a member of the 1940 World Champion Reds. After retiring as a player, Turner served for 24 seasons (1949 to 1959, 1961 to 1973) as pitching coach with the Yankees and Reds. He coached on seven Yankees world championship teams (1949 to 1953, 1956, 1958). In 231 career regular season games, Turner won 69 and lost 60 with a 3.22 lifetime ERA.
