James Herman Rabe

The Oregonian Portland, Oregon Wednesday, June 29, 2022 James Herman Rabe June 1934 - June 2022 James "Jim" Herman Rabe, 87 of Salem, Ore., peacefully passed away in June 2022. Jim was born in June 1934 to Hugo and Lena Rabe in Dickenson, N.D. The family ended up in Oregon and Jim graduated from Albany High School in 1952. After high school Jim and the family moved to Salem where he lived most of his life. Jim attended Willamette University, part of ROTC (Air Force) and the Sigma Chi fraternity. He graduated with a degree in Pre Med in 1956. In 1948 the Rabe family started 7up bottling in Albany, then moved the family and business to Salem in 1952. The company was proudly family owned and operated until it was sold in 1991. Jim was on the Salem City Council in the late 70's. Jim liked to stay busy and was a realtor with Caldwell banker, active in the Chamber of Commerce, serving as president of the local chapter, and various other civic organizations. Jim married Barbara Johnson in 1964. Jim and Barbara had one son together, Mike Rabe, and Jim adopted Barbara's other son, Jim Rabe. Jim and Barbara divorced in 1968. In 1986 Jim met the love of his life, his wife of 36 years, Judy Rabe. They met while both vacationing in Sun Valley Idaho and from that time on never spent much time apart. Jim and Judy enjoyed traveling the world together, being part of the Air Stream Club, and spending time with friends and family. They loved having visitors when they wintered in Lanai, and later in Arizona, when they decided to winter a little closer to home. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Dan Rabe. Jim is survived by his wife, Judy Rabe; his brother, Tom Rabe; sister, Marli Albrecht; sons, Jim and Mike Rabe; stepchildren, Jill Crutcher and Jon Summers; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Jim will be dearly missed and always remembered. A public graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., July 13, 2022, at Cloverdale Cemetery, 10275 Parrish Gap Road S.E., Turner, Oregon 97392.
