James Edward Moffatt

James Edward Moffatt died peacefully in his sleep on March 27, 2023, at age 82. Jim was born on June 13, 1940, in Lonaconing, Maryland. He attended Valley High School, where he played on the varsity basketball team, and graduated in 1958. He earned Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in education from what was then Frostburg State Teacher's College (now Frostburg State University). Jim taught school for over 40 years in Carroll and Frederick Counties. He began teaching at what was then Elmer Wolfe Junior High School in Union Bridge, Maryland, where he taught mathematics and boys physical education. He later taught mathematics at Thomas Johnson Middle School and Monocacy Middle School. Over his career, he taught several generations of students and mentored dozens of teachers. He earned numerous teaching awards including being a Maryland Teacher of the Year Finalist. Jim was an avid sports fan and was devoted to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, Dallas Cowboys, and Indiana Hoosiers. He enjoyed attending baseball games including the Orioles and Frederick Keys. Jim also enjoyed feeding birds (but not squirrels), reading, travelling, and gardening. He loved sending greeting cards to his many friends and relatives for holidays, encouragement, and other occasions. Jim was active in his church where he served on many committees, organized a college scholarship fund, and enjoyed planning social events and trips. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of over 57 years, Barbra (Nicodemus) Moffatt; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Barbetta Moffatt; five grandchildren, Jesse Moffatt, Jessica Staub, Peter Moffatt, David Moffatt, and Ava Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Starner and Landyn Staub; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Nellie (Warnick) Moffatt; a brother, Richard "Dick" Moffatt; a sister, Elaine (Moffatt) Nightingale; and a daughter, Susan (Moffatt) O'Neill. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Linganore United Methodist Church in Unionville, Maryland, with a meal to follow. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Linganore United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund or to the college scholarship fund of your choice.
