James Luther Hendrix

Luther Hendrix was born in High Point, Alabama on December 17, 1927, the second of three children born to Abe Hendrix and Bessie L. Browder. He graduated from Valley Head High School in Dekalb County, Alabama. At the age of 15, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Phillippines. He graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) and remained a lifelong supporter of the university. Mr. Hendrix retired from Federal Land Bank Div. of the Farm Credit Administration and continued his service as an avid community supporter, serving on the Dekalb County Commission and various community boards, and a member of Robertson's Chapel Methodist Church. As owner of JLH Enterprises, Inc., in Fort Payne, AL, he continued a business of agriculture and livestock with a unique interest in exotic animals, the result of a love for animals that began with a pet monkey while serving in the Phillippines. His collection of exotic animals was impressive and extensive, and was shared with many church groups and others who delighted in his tour. Mr. Hendrix was recognized for his service in community life, but will probably be most remembered for his "ministry" of a quick, warm wit and charm that touched the lives of all who encountered him. He had the gift for making people laugh – a gift he shared generously with a warm heart. He is preceded in death by his parents and his daughters, Anna Faye Hendrix and Melanie D'Lena Wilks. He is survived by two daughters, Karen Bevill (Donald) and Jamie Doss (Jeremy), nine grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Special friends and caretakers Joey and Melanie Garrett and family. Luther Hendrix was a man who loved his family, his friends, his community, and his country. Family will be receiving friends on Saturday, January 20, 2024, 2 pm – 4 pm and Sunday, January 21, 2024, 1 pm-2 pm at Rainsville Funeral Home. A homecoming celebration will be Sunday, January 21, 2 pm, in Rainsville Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in the Pine Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Pine Grove Cemetery Fund.
