About J Early
J. Mark Early, former owner of Early's Old Fashioned Chocolates, Reading, died Thursday night at 10:15 in St. Joseph Hospital, where he had been a patient since Monday. Early, 81, of 1428 Amity St., operated the candy store at his residence for 38 years, retiring in December 1976. He was the husband of Millie E. (Hollenbach) Early. During the heyday of the Early operation, when there operated the small factory, three retail shops and a bustling mail order business, the Earlys employed more than 20 persons. Early developed a reputation for making a good chocolate candy, a reputation which caused business to prosper even though the Early chocolates cost a few pennies more than the chocolates mass produced by the larger candy companies. Even to the final day of production, Early continued to make chocolates in the old-fashioned way, using pure cream and butter. Born in Palmyra, Lebanon County, he was a son of the late Joshua R. and Christine (Mark) Early. Early was a member of Nativity Lutheran Church, Reading. In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son, Josh of Allentown; four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. The Sanders Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
