About Iris East
Iris Powell East, age 95, passed away peacefully in her home on March 7, 2024. Born September 9, 1928, in Dry Fork, Pittsylvania County, daughter of W.I. Powell and Stella May Davis Powell. On October 26, 1946, she married Samuel Jefferson East. They were blessed with a daughter, Jo Ann East Arnold. Iris worked for Dan River Mills for over 45 years, and was a very loved and admired member of The Sheva Church of Christ. In her retirement Iris enjoyed her family and friends with whom she made numerous travels. She was particularly admired for her wonderful cakes and goodies, giving so selflessly to so many for so many years. She is survived by her daughter Jo Ann East Arnold, her grandchildren, J.J. and Angela Arnold, great-grandchildren, Elijah and Samuel Arnold as well as her brother Harry Ray Powell of Asheville, NC. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Sam East, Herbert Powell, her brother, and two sisters, Virginia Fuquay and Eunice Payne.
