Ida Gwendolyn Adkins

Ida Gwendolyn (Gwen) Adkins Parsonsburg - Ida Gwendolyn (Gwen) Adkins, age 87, of Parsonsburg, passed away on Monday, July 30, 2018 peacefully at Coastal Hospice at the Lake. Born on May 9, 1931 in Salisbury, MD, she was the daughter of the late Fred B. Adkins and Ruby Adkins. Gwen is survived by two brothers Fred B. Adkins (Mary Ann) and Josephus W. Adkins (Joan), several nieces and nephews as well as her dog "Molly", who was her constant companion. In addition to her parents, Gwen was preceded in death by a sister Pauline A. Wood. Gwen graduated from Wicomico High School. Following her graduation, she attended nursing school in Wilmington, Delaware. After serving as a nurse at Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury and the VA Hospital in Washington, D. C.; she enlisted in the United States Air Force, where she achieved rank as a Major and serviced active duty in Japan. After returning from her two year active duty, she resided in Washington, where she completed four additional years with the Air Force as a reserve. Later, Gwen went into private nursing. After fully retiring, she moved back to Salisbury, where she was a active member in the MarZion Homemaker's Club. In addition, Gwen was a member of Allen Memorial Baptist Church and in her childhood and younger years attended Zion Methodist Church. The family has asked for friends to plant a perennial in remembrance of Gwen's love of life for birds and flowers. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury with Reverend William Warren officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Gwen's honor to Coastal Hospice, P.O.
