Icie June Erwin

Icie Cantley Erwin, Educator Mrs. Icie June Erwin, age 91, of Carmel, IN, passed to her heavenly home on November 9, 2014 at home surrounded by family. Formerly a Shelby County resident of Fountaintown, IN, Mrs. Erwin was born October 14, 1923 in Rock Creek, West Virginia, the daughter of Dewey and Gracie Cantley. Mrs. Erwin attended Concord College in Athens, W VA, receiving her Bachelor's Degree from Butler University. Mrs. Erwin began her teaching career in a one-room school house in Rock Creek, W. VA in 1945. An accomplished elementary school educator, Mrs. Erwin taught first grade for nearly 40 years at both Fountaintown Elementary School, and Triton Elementary School in Shelby County, Indiana. Mrs. Erwin took great pride managing both her household and full-time career. She was an accomplished mentor to her children and many students over the years. She loved fishing, camping, was an avid reader, loving wife, loving mother, and an excellent cook. Mrs. Erwin was married to John Howard Erwin in Greenup, Kentucky in 1948. She is predeceased by her husband, John Erwin; her sister, Mabel Clay, and her brother, James Cantley. She is survived by her sister, Ethel McKnight (Dempsey) of Rock Creek, West Virginia; sister-in-law, Edna Papciak, Tonawanda, New York; four children, Anita Adkins (Wayne), Dewey Erwin (Karla), Deborah Lau (Carl), and Roger Erwin (Faire Elizabeth); seven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held immediately following visitation. Reverend Bob Hays will be officiating. The family would like to encourage everyone to stay for a meal to follow the service. A private interment will follow the meal at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown, Indiana.
