About Howard Howie
Professional Baseball Player. Left handed pitcher signed by the St. Louis Cardinals. After going 20-3 in 1941 for the Houston Buffaloes in the Southern League he was promoted to the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1943 he was 8-4 with the Cardinals. He was leading the league with a 1.75 Earned Run Average but left the team before the end of the season to join the military and fight in the war. He returned from the war and in 1946 he went 21-10 with a 2.10 ERA leading the Cardinals to the National League pennant. He won 20 games again in 1949 with a 2.77 ERA and led the National League with 5 shutouts. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 15, 1951 and later also pitched for the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox. Arm problems plagued him later in his career and he never won more than 8 games in a season after being traded by the Cardinals. He retired from baseball in 1956. In his 14 year career he won 131 games including 25 shutouts despite losing 2 1/2 prime years while serving in the military. He died from cancer.
