Hisham Istwany

The Istwany family of White Plains, NY, is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Hisham Istwany on October 30, 2022, at his home of 52 years surrounded by his loved ones. Born in 1930 in Homs, Syria, he attended the Frères Maristes (Marist Brothers) School in Damascus, Syria where he fell in love with the French language and culture. Doctor Istwany studied medicine at the Sorbonne in Paris before emigrating to the United States. He did his residency at St. Claire's Hospital in New York where he met Jean Theresa Augustine, nursing student who became his wife. He entered private practice as an OB/GYN at St. Agnes Hospital and enjoyed privileges at United and White Plains Hospitals. Sham as he was known by friends is remembered for his kindness, compassion, patience, composure and eternal optimism. Everyone who knew him, loved him. He is survived by Jean Istwany, loving wife, three children, Basil and wife Laura Jean, Sarah and husband Vincent, and Heather and husband Geoffrey, as well as five grandchildren, Gabriel, Giulia, Baxter, Alexander, and Quinten. Doctor Istwany was well known and highly regarded in the White Plains community. He brought many lives into the world. And he continued to serve the people of White Plains as a volunteer firefighter. He will continue to be deeply missed and loved by all who have been lucky enough to have known him. If attending the funeral, women are asked to wear scarves to cover their head. If needed, the funeral home will provide one.
