She was 87. Harriet was born on Sept. 20, 1924, in Portland, to the Rev. Albert Herman and Harriet Madelyn Griffin Smith. She had four elder brothers: Albert, Herman, Paul and Willard. Her parents moved the family to various northwest districts where they reorganized and established Nazarene churches. She attended Northwest Nazarene College in Napa, Idaho, George Fox College in Newberg, Reed College in Portland and Portland State College. She also graduated from Northwest School of Photography and opened a portrait and commercial studio in Canby from 1948-57. She married Albert Henry Kraft in 1943 and had five children. Harriet was an avid bowler and was a member of the Portland Journal All Stars. She served as Oregon State Director of Junior Bowling for 11 years and coached the junior traveling league. She represented Oregon in the National U.S. Open Tournament in 1963 in Dallas, Texas, where she placed 26th in the nation. In 1969, she became Oregon State Women's match game champion. In 1986, Harriet was installed in the Oregon State Women's Bowling Hall of Fame. After her husband's death in 1968, she moved to Gleneden Beach, where she worked as executive secretary of Salishan Lodge for seven years. Harriet's love of bowling led her back to Portland in 1976 to purchase Barbur Bowl. Then in 1981, Harriet moved to St. Helens where, with her children Randy and Lori, purchased and operated Oregon Trail Lanes for 25 years. Other avid interests were fishing, river rafting and traveling with her grandchildren. Her last big catch was a 46-pound Chinook caught in the Umpqua River. Harriet loved to travel – traveling to California, up the Alaskan Highway, the coast and annual trips to Kah-nee-ta. Harriet's mind was sharp and quick-witted right to the end. She was a wonderful giving and thoughtful woman and will be missed by many. Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; husband and her elder brothers. She is survived by her children, Larry (Donna) Kraft, of Sun City, Ariz., Gwen Kraft, of Avila Beach, Calif., Randy Kraft, of St. Helens; Sue (Steve) Callaway, of Roseburg and Lori Kraft, of St. Helens; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at Zion Memorial Cemetery in Canby, on June 30, beginning at 10 a.m., with a reception to follow.
