About Hammie Nixon

Blues Musician. He was born Hammie Nickerson in 1907 (some sources say 1908), in Brownsville, Tennessee. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by foster parents. He began his music career in the early 1920s by playing in jug bands. He is best known as a country blues harmonica player, but Nixon was also a talented guitarist, jug, and kazoo player. His talents provided him with the opportunity to work with such blues greats as Little Buddy Doyle, Son Bonds, Lee Green, Charlie Pickett, and Sleepy John Estes. With Estes alone, their partnership lasted for over 50 years. After Estes passed away in 1977, Nixon joined the Beale Street Jug Band (later the Memphis Beale Street Jug Band), and played with them until his own death in 1984. A fine harmonica player, he was also considered a pioneer in the use of that particular instrument, not only in a band setting but also as a novelty solo instrument. Some of Nixon's magic can be heard on such recordings as, "Viola Lee Blues", "It's A Good Place To Go", "Sugar Mama", "Bottle Up And Go", "My Baby Left Town", "You're Gonna Look Like A Monkey When You Get Old", "Skinny Mama", and "Holy Spirit, Don't Leave Me." His last recording, "Tappin' That Thing", was released just before his death.
