About H. A. Edwards

My Daddy had to quit school after 9th grade to help with home finances. He liked to work with his hands and took up carpentry. He built many houses in Obion County including his own at 712 E. Bishop Street in Union City, TN. 38261. He built the Tom Elam Complex on the campus of University of Tennessee Martin. He was a WW II Veteran having served in the USArmy.He was stationed in Galveston, Texas and Atlantic City, N.J. He lived his entire life in Obion County, TN. He loved family history and could tell names of many of his ancestors. His Edwards migrated from North Carolina to Marshall County, TN. and then to Obion Couny. He delighted everyone with his family stories. His favorite was when Uncle Abe took a shortcut through H.A.'s daddy's farm on his way to his uncle's house. Uncle Abe came upon a big black bear. Uncle Abe froze and the bear reared upon his hind legs. Eventually the bear sauntered off and Uncle Abe never took that shortcut again. His retirement years were spent with second wife, Janet Stehl at their home in Union City. He was a member of Second Baptist Church. By his daughter, Elwanda Edwards Murphy ∼ Son of Oscar Robert and Lula Bell {Grooms} Edwards. Sister was Mildred Marlene Edwards Bramlett, brother was James Milton Edwards. Attended Pea Patch and Freemont Schools. He had to quit after 8th grade to help family with finances. He served in USArmy as a Supply Sergeant during WWII. He received the American Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a carpenter. He married Frances Morene Brechears 1Dec1942 in Charleston, MO. He had two daughters, Elwanda and Vickie. He was divorced in 1966 and married Janet McNaught Stehl in 1985. As a child and young adult, he attended Mount Olive Baptist Church. He and Frances moved to Woodland Mills in 1949 and they attended Woodland Baptist Church. Then they moved to Union City,Obion, TN in 1960 and he attend Second Baptist Church till his death. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He died in Volunteer Hospital, Martin, Weakley County, TN. He is buried in East View Cemetery in Union City,Obion, TN. --Elwanda Edwards Murphy ∼ Grandson of Milton Sugg and Caroline {Matthews} Edwards and James Henry and Mary Jane {Clack} Grooms. Son of Oscar Robert and Lula Bell {Grooms} Edwards. Brother to Mildred Marlene and James Milton. Born in his parents home on Bumpus Road in Obion County, TN. His family owned a small farm where they grew cotton and his dad also worked as a well digger and logger. H. A. went to Pea Patch and Freemont Schools. He had to quit after 8th grade to help the family. He married Frances Morene Brechears 1Dec 1942 in Charleston, MO. He was a Supply Sergeant in USA during WWII and was stationed in Atlantic City, NJ and Galveston, Texas. After discharged, he returned to Obion County where he made a living as a carpenter until he retired. He and Frances had two daughters, Elwanda and Vickie. Frances divorced him in 1966. He married Janet McNaught Stehl in 1985. He attended Mount Olive Baptist Church as a child and young adult. In 1949, he moved his family to Woodland Mills where he attended Woodland Mills Baptist Church. In 1960, he moved his family to Union City, TN where he attended Second Baptist Church until his death. He was a Mason.
