About Gottfried Daft
Gottfried Daft was born to Michael and Christine (Fritz) Daft in Leokadiów, then located in Russia, now located in Poland. Gottfried's mother died when he was young, and his father remarried to Carolina (Jahnke) Daft. The Dafts, like many other families in the area, were ethnic Germans. Gottfried traveled to Illinois in 1907 to earn money to bring the rest of his family over to the United States. His brother Gottlieb followed in 1909. In 1912, Gottfried returned to Poland and married the recently widowed Pauline (Kading) Grams. Gottfried, Pauline, Pauline's daughter Emma, and Gottfried's father and stepmother crossed the Atlantic in May 1912 to settle in Lena, Wisconsin. His sister Anna (Daft) Kardoskee and her family followed the next year. Gottfried and Pauline had five children: Frederick, twins Mary and Martha, Henry, and Helen. Mary died in the influenza epidemic in 1921, and stepdaughter Emma may also have died around that time. The family lived in the Oconto Falls area until 1941, when they moved to a farm in Franksville, Wisconsin. Gottfried lived in that area for the rest of his life. Pauline died in 1977, and Gottfried died on March 20, 1980 in Racine, Wisconsin, at the age of 98. His four children who survived into adulthood all lived past the age of 88.
