About George Smith
George William Smith, 82, of Short Gap, died November 12, 2023, at UPMC-Western Maryland. Born November 6, 1941, in Galloway, WV, he was the son of the late Sylvanus Smith and Louise Smith-Cavalier. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Smith; infant son, George Willie Smith; brothers, Sylvanus "Buck" Smith, Juandale Smith, and Curtis Don Smith; and, a special fur grandbaby, Lotus. Mr. Smith was a member of the United Mineworkers of America. He helped build the coal mines in Philippi, WV. In his spare time, Mr. Smith liked hunting and fishing as well as woodworking. He enjoyed watching his son and grandsons play football, his great grandson play baseball, and his great granddaughter play softball. Upchurch Funeral Home
