George Mavros

George Mavros (PhD), 64, Homosassa, FL, passed at his home on Thursday, January 20th, 2022. George was born in Adelaide, Australia, on October 14, 1957, to the late Sotirios and Angela (Korogiannis) Mavros. George came to Citrus County in 1979 from Clearwater and prior to that Greece, which he considers is homeland. George earned several degrees, including a Bachelor's in Microbiology, a Master's in Microbiology, a MBA in Healthcare Administration, and a Doctorate in Health Service Management. Dr. Mavros started his career in Laboratory Medicine having served as Laboratory Director at Bayonet Point Regional Medical Center and later at Citrus Memorial Hospital, where he developed his career over 31 ½ years. At Citrus Memorial Hospital, he served as Laboratory Director, Director of Professional Services and Chief Operating Officer. Professionally he served on many boards and societies over the years including: President of the Clinical Laboratory Management Association – Florida Chapter, Chairman of the Florida Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel, was certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, National Certification Agency for Clinical Laboratory Personnel, American Medical Technologist, America Management Association, and he became a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives. He taught at Pasco- Hernando Community College (now Pasco-Hernando State College) and Central Florida Community College (now College of Central Florida). He served on numerous boards, gave presentations at national meetings on subjects ranging from Clinical Microbiology / Immunology, Laboratory Management, Development of Laboratory Outreach Programs, Electronic Medical Record implementation, and regulation in the healthcare environment amongst others. He served as Privacy and Compliance Officer, and often testified as an expert witness in depositions and court hearings. He served on various community boards including: Habitat for Humanity, Citrus County Emergency Management, Chamber of Commerce, and others. He was involved in multi-million-dollar expansion and construction projects, purchased numerous medical practices, developed the largest Out-patient laboratory service and Rehab service in Citrus County, improved quality and performance to the extent that Citrus Memorial Hospital evolved from a Leapfrog D facility to a Leapfrog B facility (0.03 points away from an A). He was the key executive who managed the transition of Citrus Memorial Hospital from a private not-for-profit to a for-profit facility under the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) umbrella when they acquired the facility in 2014. One of his most proud achievements was the establishment of the Greek Orthodox Church in Citrus County, and directly or indirectly saw the construction of a multi-million-dollar complex that will serve generations to come. His most cherished role however was husband and father. He was married to Constantina Maria Katsouris and between them they cherished 6 children: Michael George Mavros (Lauren) of Boston, MA; Daniel Michael Lucin (Gina) of Springtown, TX; Anthony George Lucin (Brittani) of Ocala, FL; Joseph Louis Lucin (Dana) of Ocala, FL; George Constantino Lucin of Homosassa, FL; and Mariana Daniella Lucin of Homosassa, FL; 7 grandchildren; and his sister, Maria Vastarides of Brooklyn, NY.
