George Frierson Altman

George Frierson Altman, 91, of Moncks Corner, SC, a retired counselor for the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department, died Wednesday morning at a local hospice house. His funeral will be 12:00 PM Saturday, May 28, 2022, in the Moncks Corner United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at 5:00 PM in the Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the CHURCH from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Friday. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Moncks Corner United Methodist Church, 106 Church St., Moncks Corner, SC 29461. Mr. Altman was born April 16, 1931, in Galivants Ferry, SC, a son of Alexander Bruce Altman and Leila Atkinson Altman. He was a graduate of Aynor High School and the Wofford College Class of 1954. Mr. Altman was an active member of the Moncks Corner United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men's Club, the Wesley Sunday School Class, and sang in the church choir until two weeks ago. He played basketball and was the quarterback for the first football team at Aynor High School. After completing his education at Wofford where he sang in the Wofford Glee Club and was a member of the ROTC, Mr. Altman joined the US Army and served in Korea. Afterwards, he returned to Aynor where he taught science and coached the girls basketball team. Upon reaching a 50 year milestone of graduation from Wofford, he became a member of the Wofford College 50-Year Club, and he also continued to play tennis until the age of 83. Mr. Altman was a Past President of the Moncks Corner Rotary Club, and he enjoyed fishing. He took great pride in being a good husband, father, and grandfather. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Catherine Bennett Altman; three daughters, Cassie "Beth" Billings and her husband, Mike, of Greenville, NC, and Ruthie Dreher and Susan Matkovich and her husband, Wally, all of Moncks Corner; six grandchildren, Leila Matkovich, Andy Billings, Sullivan Matkovich, Hope Dreher, Isabelle Matkovich, and Mary-Bennett Billings; and a great granddaughter, Molli-Reid Metts.
