About Fred Korematsu
Civil Rights Figure. A native of Oakland and a second generation Japanese American, Korematsu was living in San Leandro when the United States entered World War Two. Now at war with Japan, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 in February 1942, which ordered Japanese living on the West Coast to be rounded up and placed in internment camps regardless of their citizenship. After receiving the order to leave, Korematsu instead chose to defy it and was subsequently arrested, convicted, and forcibly interned. In response, he challenged the legality of the order in court and by 1944 the case of Korematsu v. U.S. reached the United States Supreme Court. In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled that the internment of Japanese was a justified military order. After the war, he tried to return to normal life but would be followed repeatedly by his wartime conviction. In 1983, forty years after his arrest, the ruling in his case was overturned and his record cleared. In 1988, the United States government officially apologized for it's wartime actions and granted reparations to all those who were interned. In 1998, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton for standing up against the internments during the war.
