About Francis Peay
Professional Football Player, College Football Coach. For eight seasons (1966 to 1973), he played at the offensive tackle position in the National Football League with the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs. He attended Schenley High School in Pittsburgh and played collegiate football at the University of Arizona and Cameron University, prior to moving onto the University of Missouri. While with the Tigers under Hall of Fame coach Dan Devine, Peay provided key blocking for quarterback Gary Lane during the 1965 season, which resulted in the capturing of the Sugar Bowl Title. Individually, he distinguished himself as he earned All-American and All-Big Eight status. Selected by the Giants during the 1st-round (10th overall pick) of the 1966 NFL Draft, he appeared in 103 regular season games. During his years with the Packers, he served as a blocker for Bart Starr and experienced a streak of four seasons without missing a game (1968 to 1971). After retiring as a player, he launched a lengthy coaching career initially as an assistant with the University of Notre Dame, followed by a stint at California. He became an assistant at Northwestern University and succeeded Dennis Green as head coach in 1986. He served at that capacity for six seasons (1986 to 1991) and compiled a 13 win 51 loss 2 tie record.
