Fairy Gordon Comer

Funeral services F. Gordon Comer, Jr., 92 will be Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Radney-Smith Chapel with Pastor Harris Bond officiating. Burial will in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Sylacauga, AL. Mr. Comer was born January 27, 1922 in Anniston, AL and died Sunday, January 18, 2015 in Sylacauga, AL. He graduated from Anniston High School in 1939. After working for the Alabama Highway Department he served in the United States Army during WWII in General Douglas McArthur's Safe Hands Air Courier Service. He was stationed near Tokyo Japan for the occupation of Japan. He delivered McArthur's daily orders by plane to Seoul Korea. Upon his return from Japan, Gordon, with the assistance of The G.I. Bill, enrolled in Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. He earned a B.S. and Masters in Forestry. Upon graduation he returned to Alabama and was employed for 38 years by what became The Kimberly Clark Corporation's Coosa Pines Division, retiring in 1988. He retired as Vice President of the Woodlands Operations. Mr. Comer's many accomplishments included being names President of the Alabama Forestry Association, being inducted into the Alabama Forestry Hall of Fame, serving on The Alabama Forestry Commission and being named Colorado State University's Honor Alumnus in 1985. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Gordon Comer, Sr. and Lillie Cook Comer of Anniston as well as three siblings, Robert Comer, Billie Comer and Myrtice Comer Hixson and his wife of 64 years, Inez Bryant Comer. He leaves a legacy of integrity; he was admired for it as well as a legacy for education, contributing to attainment of fourteen College degrees by his children, their spouses and his grandchildren.
