Evelyn L. Faerber

Freeport – Evelyn L. Faerber, two months form her 105th birthday of March 29, passed away quietly on January 26, 2022 at her home of 80 years. She was born in 1917 to Charles and Clara (Kachelhoffer) Faerber, the fourth daughter, but sorrowfully her mother died in the 1981-19 influenza epidemic. Known by her family as Skip, Evelyn graduated from Freeport High School in 1934 and worked twenty years for Henny Motor Works in Freeport, taking the Land O' Corn to Chicago on Fridays with the week's payroll. When that business closed, she was employed by Newell and Company for twenty seven years as head accountant. She and Bob Pilaszek, from Newell, enjoyed eating out together. Evelyn was a very organized meticulous lady in all activities. She and her sister, Margaret raised Marg;s son Paul and took care of their father until he died in 1958. They improved the sod in the back yard until fine specimens of perennials bloomed. They loved identifying birds through the dining room windows. Her hands were always busy. During World War II, Evelyn and Marg made bandages and knit olive drab scarves for the soldiers. Then both women knit dishcloths and tiny caps for preemies. They made attractive household accessories and Christmas ornaments from plastic canvas, selling some and sharing others with nieces and nephews. With her sister Bernice's husband she assisted with his large wooden train sets. Marg and Skip, Bernice and Pete, as he was known also took many trips East and West in the United States and Canada to see the sights of this great nation. Well into Skip's centenarian years, she was near her well-used Singer machine assisting with preschool nap blankets, hospice memory bears, and fabric-inset cards. Evelyn is survived by her nephew, Lee Hunsicker, of Virginia and niece Barbara Mertins of Freeport as well as numerous great nieces/nephews, great-great nieces/nephews, and great-great-great nieces/nephews. Her special correspondence friends are Dorothea Schaffer of PA and Adell Peterson of Pecatonica. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters. Bernice (Art Clay Sr.), Margaret and Clarice; a niece, nephews, and cousins. Services are Wednesday, February 2, 2022 with a visitation beginning at 10am and a service to follow at 11am all at Walker Mortuary, Freeport, IL. Her final resting place will be at Oakland Cemetery.
