About Eugene Landrum
World War II United States Army General. He enlisted in the National Guard (1909) and the Army (1910), advancing to Sergeant before receiving his commission (1916). He served in Siberia during World War I. Post-war he received promotion to Major (1927), graduated from the Command and General Staff College (1933) and War College (1935), and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel (1938). As a temporary Brigadier General early in World War II he commanded the 7th Infantry Division and defeated the Japanese in the Aleutians, receiving the Army and Navy Distinguished Service Medals. After commanding the 87th Infantry Division during training he assumed command of the 90th Infantry Division soon after D-Day. After several weeks his superiors decided the division was not performing effectively, and Landrum was relieved. Until the war's end he commanded the 71st Infantry Division during training and the Replacement Center at Camp Maxey, Texas. Post-war he was a Colonel on the Fifth Army staff. During the Korean War he was Eighth Army Chief of Staff, responsible for deploying reinforcements on the Pusan Perimeter, blunting the North Korean offensive. At his 1951 retirement he received a second Army Distinguished Service Medal. In retirement Landrum resided in San Jose, California.
