About Eugene Eckford
Eugene Thomas "Gene" Eckford, 79, husband of Joyce Haley Eckford, died Monday, March 1, 2010. Born in Westminster, he was the son of the late Ted Elmo and Bertie Crump Eckford. Mr. Eckford had owned and operated Gene's Restaurant since 1957, which is now Greenville's oldest surviving restaurant. A good hearted man, Gene never let anyone go away hungry whether they could pay or not. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, Walden Masonic Lodge #247, the York Rite, Hejaz Shrine, The Elks and the Hejaz Shrine Marching Patrol. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Andrea L. Pruitt and husband, James, of Travelers Rest; a son, Tyrone Eckford and wife, Ann, of Pelzer; three grandchildren, Kelley Orton, Miranda Barton and Hannah Barton; and a great granddaughter, Helen Orton. He was also survived by several stepchildren, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Barry Eckford. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Associations, 16-A Brozzini Court, Greenville, SC 29615 Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 3, 2010 from 6-8pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will be held Thurs, Mar 4, 2010 at 3pm in the downtown chapel. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with full Masonic Rites.
