About Edwin Woldin
Composer, Arranger. Best known for his score to the Broadway hit "Raisin," which earned him a Tony Award nomination (1973). Born Edwin Judd Woldin, the son of a shoe store proprietor, he was enthralled by jazz at an early age, becoming acquainted with the piano at the age of eight and by sixteen was a seasoned performer, as he acquired experience on the road with Lionel Hampton and Don Elliott. His skills were strengthened, as he was mentored in composition by Heinrich Jalowetz at Black Mountain College (North Carolina) and later studied under Ernst Krenek at the University of New Mexico. He attained his bachelor's and master's degrees of Rutgers University and rounded out his education with his doctoral studies at Columbia. While working in local bands, Woldin was approached by Don Elliott to contribute arrangements for his stage production of "The Beast in Me" (1963), thus initiating his association with Broadway. The decade also saw him serve as a pit musician during the run of "Hello, Dolly!," followed by his piano contributions to the production of "The Roar of the Greasepaint- The Smell of the Crowd" (1965). Woldin's fusion of blues, jazz and gospel tunes along with Robert Brittan's lyrics brought life to the production of "Raisin," and in addition to its Tony Award nominations, the play received a Grammy Award for the cast album. Woldin took his career a step further with his penning of the musical "King of Schnorrers" (1979 to 1980), for which he also provided the music and lyrics. He died from cancer.
