Son of Edwin C. Ulmer Sr. The house pictured 1st was built on the location of the early day A. W. St. John residence. It is unsure what happened to the structure that was originally there when Mr. St. John lived at that address, but the home pictured 2nd was later constructed on that location. DIES Edwin Carl Ulmer Jr., 47 Route 3, died at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Medical Center, Joplin where he had been a patient the last two weeks. He had been ill since February of this year. Born May 22, 1930, in Carthage, he had lived here his lifetime. He was married to Jeanne Hine Maxson November 14, 1975, in Miami, Oklahoma. He was a funeral director and embalmer and president of the Ulmer Funeral Home. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Mr. Ulmer attended CArthage schools from first through seventh grade and attended Wentworth Military Academy (SEARCH Ulmer ), Lexington, Missouri for grades eighth through 10th. He finished his final two years at Carthage Senior High School, graduating in 1947. He lettered both years in football and baseball and was active in ROTC. After graduating he attended Joplin Junior College in 1948 and the University of Missouri in 1949 and 1950. He was pledged to Beta Theta Pi. He was in the Marine Reserves and entered active duty. His father, Edwin C. Ulmer Sr. was a licensed embalmer, and he was graduated from Kansas City College of Mortuary Science with honors in October 1952. He went into a business that was established by his grandfather John T. Ulmer in 1916. His uncle Harry Dewey Ulmer also was a licensed embalmer. Mr. Ulmer served as president of the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce in 1967, was president of the Carthage Industrial Development Corporation in 1963; was a former past charter president of the Brotherhood of St. Andrews; a past senior warden of Grace Episcopal Church in 1967 and junior warden of Grace Church in 1965-66. He was a former president of the Carthage and Jasper County chapters of the American Cancer Society. He served on the international Board of Directors of the Order of Golden Rule for funeral directors, and also on the boards of the local Red Cross Chapter, former Carthage YMCA, and Big Brothers Inc. He was also chairman of the Jasper County Board of Visitors for Correctional Institutions. He was co-chairman of the first Maple Leaf Festival, chairman of Community Betterment, a member of the Carthage R-9 Board of Education, American Legion and Knights of Pythias, and was named Carthage Lions Club Citizen of the Year in 1969. Surviving are the wife of the home; two sons; Mark Howard Ulmer of Jefferson City, Missouri and Michael Ferol Ulmer of Carthage two daughters; Mrs. Allen* [Suzie] Ulmer McReynolds IV of Joplin *note later divorced and Cynthia Ulmer of Carthage three step-daughters Mrs. Don Howard Miss Carolyn Maxson and Mrs. Vickie Love all of Carthage his mother; Grace Ulmer Hill two step-brothers; Max L. Hill Jr. of Charleston, South Carolina and James Hill of Worthington Hills, Ohio a step-sister; Mrs. William F. Hill of Simi Valley, California an aunt; Mrs. Geneva Wagner of the Hidden Acres addition east of Carthage and a grandchild; Allen McReynolds V Services were held at the First United Methodist Church Carthage, MO Researched and prepared by Boggess and Brewer
