About Channing Nixon

Obituary of Channing Nixon Channing Joseph Nixon SFO, a 3rd Order Franciscan and resident of Windsor, Colorado and Iowa City, Iowa, passed away, Tuesday, February 14, 2023, following a lengthly illness with Parkinson's Disease, Chronic Heart Failure, Pulmonary Emphysema and Prostate Cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am, Monday, February 20, 2023, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with Father Gary Beckman officiating. A Rosary will be offered at 9:30 a.m., also at the church. Interment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. Channing is survived by his sister, Mrs. Regina Bellinghausen, by those he loved; and his children who were his life. Heather Elizabeth and her son James David of Houston, Texas, Carter Lawrence and his wife Sherry of Katy, Texas and his two children, Grant and Isabel and their Step-Sister, Alexandra; Hilary Anne and her husband Jeff Peeples of the Woodlands, Texas. Channing attended the University of Iowa and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, graduating from Regis University in Denver. He retired from Swissair, the Airlines of Switzerland after 35 years in management, and was based in Denver, New Orleans, Houston and Washington D.C. He was particularly close to the Cloistered Poor Clare's in Alexandria, Virginia whom he considered his extended family, and the Missionaries of Charity at Wheeler Road in Washington D.C. who were close to his heart. During his life, he was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Washington D.C., St. Lawrence the Martyr in Alexandria, VA; volunteer at the Missionaries of Charity Women's Shelter and Soup Kitchen in Washington D.C., and at Christ House and Shelter in Alexandria, VA. He belonged to the Legion of Mary, Nocturnal Adoration Society, and was an Ambassador of Mary for the Diocese of Arlington. Channing served the Assisted living Communities at Manchester Lakes in Alexandria where he led weekly devotional services. In Iowa City, he was a Eucharistic Minister and Lector and part of the Outreach Ministry at St. Wenceslaus, for which he was most grateful. Channing was a professed 3rd Order Franciscan and member of San Damiano Franciscan Fraternity, and the Knights of Columbus. In lieu of flowers, Mass memorials for the repose of his soul can be directed to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with that intention.
