Carolyn Jeanette Fry

Carolyn was inurned at St. Mark's Lutheran Church columbarium, Charlotte NC. CHARLOTTE NC - Carolyn Sigmon Fry, 84, passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, Feb. 21, 2014. Born in Claremont Jan. 24, 1930, Carolyn was the youngest of six children born to architect/contractor, Jacob James Sigmon and homemaker, Claudia Hoke Sigmon. At Claremont High School, Carolyn excelled in academics and athletics. She enjoyed serving in a wide variety of leadership capacities, including Junior and Senior Class President. Voted "Most Popular" in high school, Carolyn attracted many friends throughout her life with her friendliness and interest in others. Also voted "Most Original" in high school, her friends and family admired her artistic, creative, and culinary talents, her desire to "be different," and her passion for excellence in all that she did. After graduating from high school, Carolyn attended Miss Mebane's Finishing School for Girls, where she learned skills that served her well in her position as Executive Secretary at Pilot Brokerage Company in Charlotte. On Aug. 27, 1950, she married the love of her life, P. Allen Fry, from Startown. Together they had two daughters, Carol and Susan. Carolyn and Allen lived in Charlotte from 1950 to 1960; in Spartanburg, S.C., from 1960 to 1973; and again in Charlotte from 1973 until the present. They enjoyed bowling and playing bridge, and were active members of St. Mark's Lutheran Church (Charlotte) and St. John's Lutheran Church (Spartanburg). When she became a mother, Carolyn became a full-time homemaker, a position that she relished more than any other. She created a beautiful, love-filled home, and she enthusiastically supported her family's many activities--as well as the Carolina Tar Heels! Allen and Carolyn loved taking their daughters on adventurous road trips--to Montreal for Expo '67, to Cape Canaveral for the launch of Apollo 11, to California on a cross-country trip, and to Philadelphia for the U.S. Bicentennial. They managed to visit every state in the USA except for Hawaii and Alaska. In addition to her parents, Carolyn was predeceased by her siblings, Twila Rose Hollar, Lorene Moser, Arthur Sigmon and James Hoke Sigmon. She is survived by Allen, her devoted husband of 63 years; her daughter, Carol Fry Bohlin and Carol's husband, Roy, of Fresno, Calif.; her daughter, Susan Fry Ginns and Susan's husband, Marc, of Huntersville; three beloved grandchildren, Christopher Bohlin, Ashley Ginns and Virginia Ginns; sister, Mildred Lafone and husband, Fred, of Claremont; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207. A reception at the church will follow the service. Private inurnment at the church columbarium will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church or to the Alzheimer's Association of Western North Carolina (www.alz.org/north carolina/).
