About Betty Lineberger

Betty Jean White Lineberger, 88, of Denver passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022 at Lincolnton Rehabilitation Center. She was born February 10, 1933 in Catawba County to the late Fred Tate White and Pauline Setzer White. Betty was a very quiet person, she did not like attention, at the same time she was always involved behind the scenes to make things happen. Before dementia took over, she was well known for her coconut cakes and pumpkin rolls. There was not a birthday that went by that you didn't get a Big coconut cake, and at Christmas time you could count on both being on the table. When Betty and Vernon's long-awaited granddaughter, Ashley was born, she quit work to spend every second she could with her. There were many hours sitting on the front porch holding Ashley in her favorite rocking chair, rocking away teaching Ashley to sing "This Little Light of Mine", "Standing in the Promise Land" and her favorite "Victory in Jesus". Betty and Vernon uniquely raised rabbits, for Ashley to hold and to use their pills to help produce the largest heads of cabbage seen in this area; this cabbage was used for the famous slaw at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church barbeques. Before Ashley came along, Betty's passion was spending days in her yard, between the elephant ears, pansies and various other plants. Her favorite flowers were Mandeville's, with her green thumb they always turned out so beautiful that photographers would stop and take pictures. Betty was born in the time frame that could truly be related to as hard times, when asked what her favorite Christmas present was when she was growing up, she would always say, "when I was 9 I got 6 pieces of the orange jelly slice candy. Betty loved basketball, she was a 1951 graduate of Sherrill's Ford High School Tigers, and started all 4 years, even though she played all 4 years, she never scored a point. Being a guard, they were not allowed beyond half court. When fouled they had to pick someone to shoot their foul shots, her sister Joyce took care of that for three of those four years. As calm and quite as Betty was, she took pride in saying she never finished a basketball game without fouling out, so yes, she had an aggressive hidden side. Comically in those days, she said they only had one cheerleader, so when she fouled out, she would help cheer for her team. Of course, she would also have to talk about all the women sitting on one side of the gym and the men on the other, as the men had to keep the pot-bellied stoves stoked. What times that must have been. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Vernon Franklin Lineberger; sister, Joyce W. Setzer Campbell; and brother, Emmett Lee White. Those left to cherish her memory are; Son: Micheal (Mike) Curtis Lineberger and wife Alice of Sherrills Ford Granddaughter: Ashley L. Sherrill and husband Bryan of Catawba Great-Granddaughter: McKenzie Leigh Sherrill Great-Grandson: Miles Dalton Sherrill Niece: Jacquelyn S. Campbell Great Niece and Nephews: Jessica C. Waterman, Tate Campbell, and Tyler Campbell A graveside service to celebrate Betty's life will be held on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery in Sherrills Ford. Rev. Jonathan Brake will officiate.
