Bertha Belle Mills

Bertha Belle (Helms) Mills, 96, of Cottageville, WV, passed away August 15, 2023, in Ravenswood Care Center following an extended illness. She was born August 8, 1927, in Enterprise, WV, a daughter of the late Fay Helms and Mary (Ray) Helms Pennington. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Olin R. "Bill" Mills; son, Allen Mills; granddaughters, Tonya M. Mills and Nikki Richards; brothers, Bernard, Joe and Donnie Helms; sisters, Doris, Kay and Ellen. She was a graduate of Shinnston High School. She was the former owner and operator of the Cottageville Restaurant. She retired from Jackson General Hospital Dietary Department with many years of service. She was a member of the Antioch Church and Ladies Aid, Cottageville, WV and read her bible and prayed daily before dementia left her unable to do so. Bertha enjoyed cooking, word searches, Elvis Presley, family get togethers, decorating for holidays, especially Christmas, and the county fair where she enjoyed funnel cakes and visiting with the community. She was a member of the Rebekahs, and always opened her home to those in need or for a place to stay. In later years she became deaf and had to communicate by writing with friends and family. Survivors include her daughter, Sandra (Randall) Hartley of Evergreen Hills; son, Eugene Mills of Mississippi; 8 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. ~ Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, WV with Rev. Karen Ritchie officiating. Burial will follow in Blaine Memorial Cemetery, Cottageville, WV. Visitation will be from 12 o'clock noon until time-of-service Thursday.
